Cambodia Wilderness Enduro

After a night spent in the heart of the sacred Kulen Mountain, today’s ride takes us deeper into Cambodia’s remote northern plains. We descend from the highlands and set our course for ancient temples and the frontier town of Sra Em, gateway to Preah Vihear.

The day begins with an exhilarating descent from Kulen Mountain. We’ll navigate a mix of winding dirt roads and fun, flowing single tracks that cut through the dense forest. As we leave the mountain behind, the terrain opens up into a classic Cambodian countryside of sprawling rice paddies and scattered villages. The trails become a thrilling blend of hard-packed clay, sandy sections, and graded dirt roads, offering fast and enjoyable riding.

Our first major stop is the incredible temple complex of Koh Ker. Once a powerful capital of the Khmer Empire, it is now a sprawling archaeological site dominated by a stunning seven-tiered pyramid, Prasat Thom. We’ll park the bikes and explore this magnificent, jungle-clad “lost city,” climbing the pyramid for breathtaking views of the surrounding forest.

From Koh Ker, the adventure continues as we ride a network of incredible red-dirt trails heading north. This section is pure off-road bliss, with trails that wind through remote forests and past small, isolated communities. The riding is engaging and offers a true sense of exploration as we push through areas rarely visited by outsiders.

In the late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Sra Em, a small town near Preah Vihear province. After a long and rewarding day of riding and discovery, we’ll check into our hotel, wash off the day’s dust, relax by the pool, and enjoy a well-earned local dinner, resting up for the next day’s adventure.

Today’s journey takes you deep into Cambodia’s wild northern frontier, where adventure and natural beauty abound. Setting out early from Sra Em, you’ll leave the town behind and hit a network of remote trails that skirt the Laos border. The ride is an exciting mix of dusty dirt roads, winding single tracks, and stretches of forest, offering a true sense of freedom and exploration in a region rarely seen by outsiders.

Along the way, you’ll pass through small, remote villages where life moves at a gentle pace. The scenery constantly shifts—from thick patches of forest to open countryside dotted with farmland and distant mountain ridges. This section is all about enjoying the changing landscapes and the thrill of riding through unspoiled territory.

By midday, you’ll arrive at Preah Romkel, a tranquil eco-tourism community along the mighty Mekong River. Here, the river widens and splits into countless islands, creating a spectacular and peaceful setting. Take a break, experience the laid-back atmosphere, and embark on a local boat cruise to seek out the rare and endangered Irrawaddy dolphins—a truly memorable highlight of the trip. The day concludes with a relaxing evening in the village of Preah Romkel, where you can enjoy the serene riverside atmosphere, interact with the friendly locals, and savour a home-cooked meal before settling into your community homestay for the night.

Today offers a unique blend of river exploration and classic Cambodian dirt bike riding. We’ll wake up in the peaceful riverside community of Preah Romkel and start the day not on our bikes, but on the water, before hitting the trails south to the bustling provincial capital of Stung Treng.

The morning begins with a captivating boat trip from Preah Romkel, heading north on the mighty Mekong River towards the Laos border. This area is known as Si Phan Don, or ‘4,000 Islands,’ a stunning archipelago where the river splinters into a maze of channels. The highlight of the boat journey is a visit to the magnificent Sopheakmit Waterfall, a powerful series of cascades that thunder across the Laos-Cambodia border. Feeling the spray and hearing the roar of the falls is an awe-inspiring experience and provides a fantastic perspective on the river’s power.

After returning to Preah Romkel, it’s time to saddle up. We’ll get back on our bikes and begin the ride south towards Stung Treng. The route follows the Mekong’s course, offering a fantastic mix of riverside trails that are both scenic and fun to ride. We’ll navigate through a variety of terrain, from flowing, hard-packed dirt roads to sandy patches and winding single tracks that weave through traditional Cham fishing villages.

This is a day for soaking in the classic Mekong scenery. You’ll ride past stilted houses, watch fishermen casting their nets, and wave to friendly locals as you pass through their communities. The riding is less technically demanding, allowing you to relax and enjoy the beautiful, ever-changing river views.

We will arrive in Stung Treng in the late afternoon, check into our hotel, and relax. In the evening, you can explore the lively riverfront, enjoy a delicious Khmer barbecue, and absorb the bustling atmosphere of this important trading hub on the Mekong.

Prepare for one of the most challenging and rewarding days of the tour as we leave the Mekong behind and venture deep into Cambodia’s ‘Wild East’. Today’s ride takes us from Stung Treng to the highland province of Ratanakiri, a remote region famous for its rugged beauty, ethnic minority groups, and signature red-earth trails.

The day starts with a ride out of Stung Treng, quickly leaving the tarmac for a network of dirt tracks heading east. The landscape begins to change almost immediately, shifting from the flat, fertile plains of the Mekong basin to more undulating terrain. The trails here are a fantastic mix of hard-packed dirt, loose gravel, and sandy sections that demand your full attention.

This route is a true off-road adventure, taking us through dense bamboo forests and across several streams and small rivers. The crossings add an extra layer of challenge and fun to the day’s ride. We will pass through remote villages where the traditional way of life has changed little over the centuries, offering a glimpse into a side of Cambodia that few visitors ever see.

As we push deeper into Ratanakiri province, the soil turns a vibrant, rich red. You’ll be riding through a landscape of rubber plantations and cashew farms, with the red dust coating everything in sight—a badge of honor for completing this legendary route.

The final destination for the day is the provincial capital, Banlung. After a long and dusty ride, our first stop will be the stunning Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake. This perfectly circular, crystal-clear crater lake is considered sacred by the local people and is the perfect place for a refreshing and well-deserved swim.

Once we’ve washed off the day’s grime, it’s a short ride into Banlung to check into our hotel. The evening is yours to relax, share stories of the day’s epic ride, and enjoy a meal in this unique and remote highland town.

Today’s ride is a legendary point-to-point journey connecting Cambodia’s two great eastern provinces. We depart from the red-earth highlands of Ratanakiri and set our sights south for the cooler, rolling hills of Mondulkiri. This is a long and challenging day in the saddle, taking us through some of the most remote and sparsely populated regions in the country.

The trail is a fantastic mix of hard-packed red clay, winding sandy tracks, and old, broken dirt roads. You’ll navigate through dense bamboo forests, cross rickety wooden bridges, and power through sections of loose gravel, demanding constant focus and rewarding you with an incredible sense of accomplishment.

This is a day of pure, uninterrupted riding. The trail leads us far from major towns, passing through only small, isolated indigenous villages where you’ll get a rare glimpse into a traditional way of life. The landscape is a constantly changing canvas of thick jungle, rubber and pepper plantations, and wide-open stretches offering breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness.

As we push further south, the terrain begins to shift. The vibrant red soil of Ratanakiri gives way to the darker earth and rolling, pine-clad hills that mark our arrival in Mondulkiri. We’ll reach Senmonorom, the provincial capital, in the late afternoon. The cooler air and the scent of pine will be a welcome change. After a long and epic day on the bikes, we’ll check into our hotel, clean up, and enjoy a well-deserved meal, sharing stories from one of the most memorable rides of the tour.

After the epic journey to reach Mondulkiri, today is all about exploring the unique beauty of this incredible province without the need to pack up and move on. We’ll embark on a spectacular riding loop starting and ending in Senmonorom, allowing us to dive deep into the region’s stunning landscapes and rich culture.

The day begins with a ride out of town and into the rolling hills that make Mondulkiri famous. The trails here are a joy to ride, with fast, flowing dirt tracks winding through pine forests, grassy hillsides, and deep valleys. The cooler climate and unique scenery make it feel like a different country altogether. We’ll ride through several traditional Bunong villages, where you can see the unique architecture and daily lives of the local indigenous people.

Our main destination for the day is the magnificent Bou Sra Waterfall, one of the largest and most impressive waterfalls in Cambodia. We’ll park the bikes and take a short walk to witness the powerful, multi-tiered cascade. There’s time to relax, take photos, and even take a dip in the pools at the base of the falls if you’re feeling adventurous.

The loop continues through a mix of terrain, from challenging single tracks to scenic routes that pass by pepper, coffee, and avocado plantations. This area is also the heart of Cambodia’s elephant conservation efforts. A potential highlight of the day is a visit to an ethical elephant sanctuary. Here, you can learn about the conservation of these gentle giants and observe them in a natural, respectful environment.

As the afternoon light begins to fade, we’ll complete our loop, riding back into Senmonorom from a different direction. The final stretch offers breathtaking panoramic views over the “sea forest”—a vast, undulating canopy of green stretching to the horizon. We’ll arrive back at our hotel with plenty of time to relax and reflect on a day spent exploring the wild, beautiful, and culturally rich heart of Mondulkiri.

Today marks our departure from the cool highlands of Mondulkiri as we descend back towards the Mekong River basin. The ride is a fantastic transition day, taking us from the pine-scented hills of the east to the palm-fringed riverbanks of Kratie.

We’ll start the morning by riding out of Senmonorom, navigating the winding dirt roads that offer final, sweeping views of Mondulkiri’s “sea forest.” The initial part of the journey involves fun, flowing trails that snake through the rolling terrain. As we lose elevation, the landscape gradually transforms. The pine forests give way to the rubber and cashew plantations more typical of lowland Cambodia, and the air becomes noticeably warmer.

The route is a satisfying mix of red-earth dirt roads and gravel tracks that cut through vast stretches of countryside. We’ll pass through numerous small villages and across patches of forest, offering a great balance of enjoyable riding and scenic views. This is a day for cruising and soaking in the changing scenery as we make our way west.

Our destination is Kratie, a charming and sleepy provincial town stretched along the banks of the mighty Mekong River. We aim to arrive in the mid-afternoon, giving us time to check in, relax, and then experience the town’s main attraction. We will board a local boat for a gentle cruise out onto the river. Here, in the quiet of the late afternoon, we’ll watch for the rare and endangered Irrawaddy dolphins as they surface for air. Seeing these unique creatures in their natural habitat as the sun sets over the Mekong is a truly magical and memorable experience.

The day ends with a relaxed evening along the riverfront in Kratie. You can enjoy a delicious Khmer dinner at a local restaurant and absorb the tranquil pace of life in this classic Cambodian river town.

Today marks the beginning of our journey back west, but the adventure is far from over. We’ll leave the sleepy Mekong town of Kratie, cross the river, and ride through the incredible Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary on our way to Cambodia’s central hub, Kampong Thom. This day offers some of the most beautiful and remote forest trails of the entire trip.

We start the morning by riding our bikes onto a local ferry for the crossing of the mighty Mekong River. Once on the other side, we immediately hit a network of fantastic dirt trails that lead us away from the river and into Cambodia’s heartland. The riding is superb, with a mix of red-earth roads and winding tracks that pass through classic countryside scenery of rice paddies and small villages.

The main event of the day is our route through the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Southeast Asia’s last remaining lowland evergreen woodlands. The trails here are truly special, ranging from shaded single tracks to wider forest roads that cut through the dense jungle canopy. You’ll experience an incredible sense of immersion in nature as you ride through this vital ecosystem, listening to the sounds of the forest and navigating the fun, undulating terrain.

Riding through Prey Lang offers a unique glimpse into a protected and pristine wilderness. We will make stops to appreciate the scale of the forest and enjoy the serene environment before emerging back into more open countryside.

As we get closer to Kampong Thom, the forest trails give way to more rural dirt roads. This final stretch is a beautiful cruise, allowing you to take in the scenery of central Cambodia as we near our destination. We’ll roll into Kampong Thom in the late afternoon, covered in dust but filled with the satisfaction of having traversed one of Cambodia’s most significant wild areas. The evening is for relaxing, enjoying a good meal, and preparing for the final leg of our epic journey back to Siem Reap.

We’ll ride from the country’s central plains back to where it all began in Siem Reap, but not without one last dose of fantastic off-road riding. This day is a perfect blend of scenic trails and reflection as the grand tour comes to a close.

Leaving Kampong Thom, we’ll quickly get off the main roads and onto a network of dirt trails that wind through the heart of rural Cambodia. The morning’s ride takes us along the ancient Royal Highway, a historic route that once connected the great temples of the Khmer Empire. You can feel the history beneath your wheels as we navigate these old paths, passing through quiet villages and expansive rice fields under the watch of towering sugar palm trees.

The terrain is a fun and varied mix of hard-packed clay, sandy sections, and graded dirt roads that offer a final opportunity to enjoy the freedom of riding in this amazing country. We’ll make a stop at the ancient Kampong Kdei bridge, one of the best-preserved examples from the Angkorian era, for a quick photo and a moment to appreciate the incredible history of the region.

As we get closer to Siem Reap, the trails will eventually merge with paved roads. This final stretch allows for a more relaxed pace as we ride back into the familiar city. We’ll navigate the bustling outskirts before arriving back at our starting point, completing the epic loop through Cambodia.

Upon arrival in Siem Reap, we’ll conclude the tour. It’s time to park the bikes for the last time, share stories and photos with your fellow riders, and say your goodbyes. You’ll be tired, dusty, and filled with a profound sense of accomplishment, having experienced the raw beauty, rich history, and incredible trails of Cambodia in a way few ever will.
